The festival usually lasts for 10 days with the most elaborate celebrations taking place on the final day known as Anant Chaturdashi. During these 10 days people bring home clay idols of Lord Ganesha decorate them with flowers & lightsand offer prayers & sweets to the god.

On the final day of the festival the idols are taken in a grand procession to be immersed in a body of water symbolizing the departure of Lord Ganesha to his abode in Mount Kailash. This immersion ceremony known as Visarjan is a sight to behold with thousands of people coming together to bid farewell to their beloved god.
