The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, which falls between August and September in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated for a period of ten days, with the biggest celebrations taking place on the final day called Anant Chaturdashi. During the festival, devotees install idols of Lord Ganesha in their homes and in public pandals and perform aarti, sing bhajans and offer prasad. The festival is particularly popular in the Indian state of Maharashtra, where it is celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur. On the final day of the festival, the idols are taken in procession and immersed in a body of water, symbolising the departure of Lord Ganesha from his temporary abode on Earth.
