The Story of Lord Ganesha
According to Hindu mythology Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. He is known as the remover of obstacles & the god of new beginnings. The story of his birth is quite interesting it is said that Goddess Parvati created him out of sandalwood paste to guard her while she was taking a bath. When Lord Shiva returned & tried to enter the house Ganesha not recognizing him stopped him. This angered Lord Shiva who cut off Ganeshas head. However upon realizing his mistake Lord Shiva replaced Ganeshas head with that of an elephant thus giving him his iconic appearance.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great enthusiasm & fervor across India. The festival usually lasts for 10 days with the biggest celebrations taking place on the final day known as Anant Chaturdashi. During this time people bring home clay idols of Lord Ganesha decorate them with flowers & ornamentsand offer prayers & sweets to the god.
On the final day of the festival the idols are taken in a grand procession to be immersed in a body of water symbolizing the departure of Lord Ganesha to his abode in Mount Kailash. This ritual is known as Ganpati Visarjan & is accompanied by singing dancingand drumming.
